Marital Rape: story behind the closed doors

Author(s) Prof. Nidhi Rathi
Country India
Abstract Marital rape is a deeply embedded issue within Indian society and is not acknowledged as a crime due to prevailing stereotypes that the label of marriage implies unconditional sexual consent. This notion comes from patriarchy, where a woman is treated as the chattel of her husband, and her autonomy (sexual autonomy) is disregarded. The stereotype that men have an absolute right over their wives’ bodies is normalized after marriage and is not considered a violation.
