Burning Beyond Silence: A Reading of Sithara’s “Fire” through the Lens of Trauma Theory

Author(s) Ms. Maanasa Merlyin Mathew
Country India
Abstract S. Sithara’s “Fire” is a compelling exploration of female trauma, agency and resistance. The short story centres on Priya, a gang-rape survivor as its protagonist, who dismantles the traditional portrayal of women as passive victims of sexual violence. Rather than internalising shame or seeking physical retribution, Priya reclaims agency through psychological manipulation of her perpetrators. Her unconventional response transforms trauma from a state of paralysis into one of conscious defiance. Drawing on Judith Herman’s Trauma and Recovery, this paper explores how silence and emotional control become mechanisms of recovery and self-assertion for the protagonist. Refusing to succumb to societal shame or victimhood, Priya reclaims agency through verbal defiance, emotional manipulation, and moral autonomy. Sithara reconfigures the concept of vengeance into an act of psychological empowerment, portraying the survivor not as a passive sufferer but as a deliberate agent of resistance. The story ultimately offers a powerful reflection on trauma, resilience, and the ways in which women confront and overcome violence within patriarchal structures.
