Generative Design and Parametric Architecture: Redefining the Role of the Architect through Artificial Intelligence

| Abstract | Advances in generative design and parametric modeling are transforming the architectural profession by introducing new forms of human–machine co-creation. This research investigates how AI-driven workflows are redefining the creative agency, decision-making authority, and technical responsibilities of architects within BIM-integrated practice. Through a systematic literature review of publications from 2018–2025, combined with cross-analysis of industry case studies, the study identifies a paradigm shift in professional roles: architects increasingly serve as system orchestrators, data strategists, and evaluators of algorithmic intelligence rather than exclusive authors of geometry. AI expands design exploration and accelerates iteration, yet retains inherent limitations related to interpretability, contextual knowledge, and ethical responsibility. The findings indicate that while automation redistributes operational tasks, accountability and design intent remain securely anchored in human expertise. The study recommends competency development, governance frameworks, and curriculum reforms to guide responsible adoption. Future advancements in mixed-reality co-design, standardized architectural datasets, and safety-assured design agents are expected to further mature AI-enabled architectural practice. |
