| Abstract | This study involves the analysis of hedges used in Filipino discourse, with the aim of avoiding direct conflict and argument in order to preserve respect and uphold politeness. The research employed a descriptive-analytical design, using the lens of Discourse Analysis (DA) to examine recorded statements containing hedges from the novels Noli Me Tangere, El Filibusterismo, and selected transcripts of actual classroom discourse among Filipino language students and teachers from the Department of Language, Literature, and Philippine Studies at the College of Arts and Letters of Bulacan State University. The hedges were categorized and analyzed in terms of their communicative function, with particular attention to pragmatic meaning. The study confirmed that hedges such as maaaring (possibly), marahil (perhaps), kung sakali (in case), sa tingin ko (in my opinion), kung ako ang tatanungin (if you ask me), makasagot na nga po (if I may respond), and other expressions, words, or phrases serve to ease communication by avoiding overt insistence, contradiction, or rejection. It was found that the appropriate use of hedges reflects linguistic intelligence and emotional sensitivity toward the conversational partner. In response to the study’s findings, it is recommended that the concept of hedges be given more emphasis in the teaching of Filipino, especially in communication-related subjects. It is ideal to discuss hedges not only in technical linguistic terms but also in socio-cultural context in order to cultivate more effective and harmonious communication. Through understanding and practicing the use of hedges, one can enhance their communicative competence across various contexts. This is the researcher's response to Sustainable Development Goal 10: Reduced Inequalities, and Goal 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions |
