Bibliometric Review and Research Trends in Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) Assessment around Rail Transit Stations

Abstract Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) is a planning approach that aims to create compact, mixed-use, and pedestrian-friendly urban areas centred around public transit stations. Rail transit stations, like metro and suburban rail stations, serve as key anchors that shape urban form, land use, and social dynamics in nearby areas.
This study focuses on assessing TOD levels around selected rail transit stations using a detailed set of social and built-environment indicators. Important indicators, such as land use mix, density, diversity, design, accessibility, and walkability, were chosen to measure the intensity and quality of TOD implementation. The study includes a review of both international and national literature to identify common assessment methods and research trends in TOD evaluation. Results show important differences in TOD levels across various station areas, highlighting places with strong TOD features and areas that need further planning efforts. The findings offer insights for urban planners, policymakers, and transit authorities to improve transit-oriented policies, strengthen land-use and transport connections, and support sustainable urban growth. This assessment aids in understanding TOD performance around rail transit stations and assists in planning for more equitable and livable urban spaces.
