Abstract A persistent disparity exists in the acquisition of external research funding, with arts and humanities faculty in college settings consistently securing less support than their STEM colleagues. This study employs a qualitative synthesis to investigate the underlying causes of this gap by examining the first-hand experiences of faculty members and integrating findings from recent literature. The research identifies a constellation of interconnected barriers that hinder success in the arts funding landscape. These include a deficit in specialized grant-writing skills tailored to humanities disciplines, a lack of sustained institutional support such as dedicated pre-award services, and high teaching loads that limit time for proposal development. Furthermore, the study highlights structural challenges such as a culture of isolated scholarship that limits cross-disciplinary collaboration, difficulty in accessing timely information about suitable funding opportunities, and complex bureaucratic procedures that create significant delays.
This paper argues that these factors do not operate in isolation but interact to create a systemic disadvantage for arts faculty. The analysis moves beyond simply cataloging these challenges to explain their synergistic effect, demonstrating how a lack of institutional support exacerbates skill gaps and workload pressures. In conclusion, the study proposes a set of practical, actionable recommendations aimed at college administrators. These strategies are designed to bolster the competitiveness of arts faculty by addressing the identified barriers through targeted interventions, thereby working to level the playing field in the competition for essential research funding.
