Language Preferences in Digital Communication: A Study of Filipino English Bilinguals
| Author(s) | Prof. Dr. Maria Santos Bulaong |

| Country | Philippines |
| Abstract | Language preferences refer to the specific languages that individuals choose or prefer to use for communication, whether written or spoken influenced by factors such as cultural identity, social roles, personal comfort, and the context of communication affecting people engagement in conversations, access services, and participate in educational or professional settings (Lamorinas, et al., 2025). This research investigated the language preferences of Filipino English bilinguals in digital communication contexts. With the increasing prevalence of digital platforms in the Philippines, understanding how bilingual individuals chose between Filipino and English in online interactions was essential for both sociolinguistic scholarship and practical applications in education, technology, and communication. Utilizing surveys and interviews, this study explored the factors influencing language choice, including context, interlocutor, topic, and perceived identity. The findings aimed to illuminate patterns of language use and the sociocultural motivations underlying these choices, contributing to a deeper understanding of bilingual communication in the digital age. |
