Vivekananda’s Integrative Vision of Vedanta : Reconciling Advaita, Viśiṣtādvaita, and Dvaita

| Abstract | Swami Vivekananda envisioned an integrative and dynamic interpretation of Vedanta that transcended sectarian boundaries and reconciled the major schools of Advaita, Viśiṣṭādvaita, and Dvaita. Rooted in the spirit of his master, Sri Ramakrishna, Vivekananda sought to revive the Vedantic spirit as a universal and rational spiritual philosophy for modern humanity. He drew upon the Upaniṣads, Bhagavad Gītā, and Brahmasūtra—texts he regarded as the foundational sources of Vedantic wisdom—to articulate a synthesis of India’s philosophical traditions. For Vivekananda, the Brahmasūtra of Vyāsa represented not merely a commentary on the Upaniṣads but a unifying exposition harmonizing the insights of various philosophical systems such as Sāṅkhya and Nyāya within the framework of Vedānta. While he affirmed Advaita as the highest realization of truth, Vivekananda acknowledged the interpretive legitimacy of Viśiṣṭādvaita and Dvaita as progressive stages in spiritual understanding. His inclusive hermeneutic emphasizes the need to move beyond dogmatic exclusivity toward a vision of spiritual unity grounded in experiential realization. Thus, Vivekananda’s integrative Vedānta represents both a continuation of India’s philosophical heritage and a reformation of religious consciousness in a global context. |
