| Abstract | The various expectations that people, groups, and societies have of each other, depending on their sex as well as the gender values and beliefs of each society form the basis of gender roles. This study probes into the perception of male roles in the Mizo Society. The study is qualitative, and primary data is collected through key informant interviews using an interview guide. Data has been analyzed using Anthropac software and presented as free-listing tables. Both genders perceive that men should be able to make decisions, take care of their families, and be helpful and dependable. They both established the role of men as primary breadwinners in their families, working hard to provide for the necessities of the household. Informants perceive that a man should take care of his family, start a family of his own, fulfill his responsibilities as father, son, and husband, and take on a leadership role in the family. Perceptions of masculinity in Mizo society, along with male role expectations, indicate subtle variations across gender. However, the findings project that both genders have incredibly high expectations of who a “man” is and should be, what roles he is expected to carry out in the family and elsewhere. It overlays a huge burden on men to be the “man” that society expects them to be. |
