| Abstract | This paper explores the profound connection between Swami Vivekananda's philosophy of education and its crucial social impact through the lens of value education (मूल्यशिक्षणम्). Vivekananda's life, deeply rooted in the practical spirituality of his guru, Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, offered a synthesis of Śaṅkara's intellect and Chaitanya's expansive heart. He considered his guru as the embodiment of the entire Indian sage tradition and its perennial wisdom (आर्षज्ञानम्). Vivekananda defined education not merely as book-learning or accumulation of information, but as "the manifestation of perfection already in man" ("Education is the manifestation of perfection that is already in man"). The primary goal of education is the holistic development of the individual—body, mind, intellect, and soul—leading to self-faith (श्रद्धा) and self-reliance. He strongly advocated that education must be man-making, life-building, and character-making, emphasizing the assimilation of ideas rather than a riot of undigested information. The paper argues that for Vivekananda, education is a process of regulating the current and expression of human will to become fruitful, making it inherently value-centric and spiritually grounded. This aligns with the Indian view of Dharma as the cultural and ethical value system that sustains society. |
