Beyond Blueprints: How Artificial Intelligence Is Revolutionizing 3D Form Exploration in Product Design

Abstract This study examines how artificial intelligence (AI) revolutionizes 3D form exploration in product design through diffusion, implicit, and graph-based neural architectures. Traditional CAD tools restrict creativity within fixed geometric parameters, whereas AI enables designers to generate complex, manufacturable, and diverse forms. Using benchmark datasets and hybrid models, the research evaluates geometric fidelity, manufacturability, and creative diversity through metrics such as Chamfer Distance (CD), Form Diversity Index (FDI), and Manufacturability Index (MI). Results show that diffusion and Diffusion GNN hybrids outperform conventional GANs and VAEs in accuracy and novelty. User studies with industrial designers highlight that human–AI collaboration enhances ideation speed and creative satisfaction without compromising structural feasibility. The findings establish AI as a catalyst for co-evolutionary design where computational intelligence augments human intuition offering a scalable framework for interpretable, efficient, and ethically responsible generative design systems.
