| Abstract | The infant mortality rate (under 5 years of age) is an important indicator of a country's overall well-being. Madhya Pradesh has an estimated mortality rate of 41 deaths before the age of one year per 1000 live births (NFHS-5). Early breastfeeding provides colostrum, which is abundant in antibodies as well as essential nutrients required for immunological development and infection resistance. Optimal breastfeeding practices are critical to reaching several Sustainable Development Goals. Breastfeeding is the foundation of baby nutrition and survival. The current study examines trends in starting breastfeeding using the National Family Health Survey data NFHS-3 (2005-06), NFHS-4 (2015-16), and NFHS-5 (2019-21). The present research examines the trends of initial breastfeeding practices and their relationship with sociodemographic characteristics among women in Madhya Pradesh. The NFHS data show a significant and consistent increase in early initiation of breastfeeding (IBF) rates across all social and demographic groups and related to delivery conditions throughout time. Place of residence, maternal education, religion, caste/tribe, location, and assistance on delivery all demonstrated these improvements. The noticeable rise in IBF rates contributes to progress towards several Sustainable Development Goals, including better childhood nutrition (SDG 2), improved child survival (SDG 3), future educational attainment through better early nutrition (SDG 4), women's empowerment (SDG 5), and reduced gaps in health among different population segments (SDG 10). |
