Abstract Research in higher education institutions is essential for the generation, discovery, innovation and development of new knowledge. Nonetheless, the research proficiency of office technology and management (OTM) teaching staff in government-owned polytechnics in south-west Nigeria is on the decline. This decline has the potential to hamper Nigeria's socioeconomic development by impeding academic mobility, credential recognition, and resource allocation. In this light, this study examined the influence of mentoring relationships (MR) and lifelong learning strategies (LLS) on research competence (RC) of OTM teaching staff in government-owned polytechnics in Southwest Nigeria. A cross-sectional survey method was employed, encompassing 118 OTM teaching personnel selected using total enumeration sampling from all 12 polytechnics in the Southwestern region offering the OTM programme. The survey data is examined applying linear regression analysis at a 0.05 significance level to evaluate three null hypotheses. The reliability coefficients for the three variables are 0.807, 0.826, and 0.891, respectively. The result shows that both mentoring and lifelong learning strategies are essential for improving research competence of the selected OTM teaching staff in the Nigerian southwest Polytechnics The study concluded that mentoring relationships and lifelong learning strategies significantly influence the research competence of OTM teaching staff in government-owned polytechnics in southwest Nigeria. As a result, the study suggests that polytechnic management and stakeholders prioritise the coordination of lifelong learning activities and improve effective mentoring programmes to augment OTM teaching staff research competency.
