Electropolymerization of Polypyrrole on Low-Carbon Steel: A Galvanostatic Approach

Abstract Polypyrrole (PPY) coatings were electrodeposited onto low-carbon steel (LCS) substrates under galvanostatic conditions in an aqueous oxalic acid medium at room temperature, with a constant current density of 0.66 mAcm⁻². The electropolymerization process was monitored by recording potential-time (E-t) curves, while the structural and morphological properties of the resulting coatings were characterized using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).
The E-t profiles revealed an induction period of 140 seconds, after which the polymerization stabilized at a potential of 0.602 V. The characterization results confirmed the successful electrosynthesis of polypyrrole (PPY) coatings, demonstrating well-formed and adherent polymer films on the low-carbon steel substrate.
