Challenges of Vegetable Production and Marketing in Bihar: The Case of Patna District

Abstract The present study was conducted in Patna district of Bihar to identify and analyze the major constraints faced by vegetable growers in production and marketing. The study aimed to understand the factors limiting productivity and profitability of vegetable cultivation in the district. Primary data were collected from 100 vegetable growers using a pre-tested interview schedule. Garrett’s Ranking Technique was used to prioritize the identified constraints. The results revealed that the major production constraints were lack of reasonable price, problem of wild and stray animals, and high occurrence of insect pests and diseases. The key marketing constraints were market price fluctuation, high transportation cost, and distant markets. The findings suggest that interventions such as ensuring fair pricing, developing storage and marketing infrastructure, and providing better pest management support can significantly enhance the profitability and sustainability of vegetable production in Patna district.
