| Abstract | Since the formation of Uttarakhand in 2000, the role of Mahila Gram Pradhans has undergone significant transformation. With growing access to education, capacity-building programs, and the support of self-help groups, many women leaders have emerged as confident, vocal, and active participants in rural governance. This research focuses on the social empowerment of Mahila Gram Pradhans in Dehradun district, a region that offers a unique blend of rural challenges and urban influence. The study explores whether political representation has genuinely translated into social empowerment. Field data was collected through interviews, observations, and secondary sources across all six blocks of Dehradun. The paper examines the journey of these women leaders from symbolic figures to empowered agents of change, highlighting both progress and the barriers that still persist. By focusing on their social participation, networks, and leadership roles, the study offers insights into the evolving landscape of grassroots democracy and gender-balanced leadership in contemporary rural India. |
