The State of Nursing and Midwifery Education in Zambia: Progress, Challenges, and Future Directions.

Abstract Background: Nursing and midwifery education is central to strengthening health systems and advancing universal health coverage. In Zambia, where maternal mortality and shortages of health professionals persist, the education of nurses and midwives holds significant importance.
Objective: This article critically explores the current state of nursing and midwifery education in Zambia, with attention to historical development, institutional structures, regulatory mechanisms, challenges, and future prospects.
Methods: A narrative review of peer-reviewed literature, policy reports, and regulatory documents published between 2020 and 2024 was conducted. Data were analyzed thematically with focus on institutional capacity, regulation, curriculum, faculty, infrastructure, and clinical training.
Results: Zambia has expanded training institutions, introduced degree and postgraduate programmes, and strengthened regulation. Yet, overcrowding in classrooms and clinical sites, faculty shortages, limited infrastructure, and weak integration of digital learning continue to undermine quality.
Conclusion: While Zambia has made strides in expanding nursing and midwifery education, sustaining progress requires investment in faculty development, competency-based education, infrastructure, and equitable access.
