| Abstract | This study thoroughly explains how trade policy tools influence the operational dynamics of one of the consumer economies with the fastest growth rates in the world by analysing the impacts of tariffs and non-tariff measures on the Indian retail sector. It examines the intricate relationships between trade protectionism and retail market liberalization in modern India by placing the discussion within theoretical and policy-oriented frameworks. By using theoretical frameworks like public choice theory, protectionism, and comparative advantage, the study provides a basis for evaluating the institutional and economic drivers of tariff and non-tariff measures use. There are two sections to the core analysis. The first one is the composition and operation of India's tariff system, which includes the Integrated GST, Basic Customs Duty, and Anti-Dumping Duty. It shows how these tariffs directly affect retail prices, sourcing tactics, and market competition. The second looks at important Non-Tariff Measures, such as import licensing, technical standards, and sanitary laws, focusing on how they affect foreign market entry tactics and limit product diversity. With an emphasis on supply chain localization, trade facilitation, and regulatory transparency, the paper provides strategic policy recommendations for important stakeholders, including the government, domestic retailers, and foreign investors. The conclusion emphasizes the necessity of a balanced approach to trade policy that balances protecting domestic industries and integrating international markets. By shedding light on the complex ways that trade barriers influence retail market outcomes in India, this study adds to the larger conversation on trade and development. |
