Guidelines and Protocols for Follow-Up in Kidney Transplant Recipients: A Review of Best Practices and Emerging Standards

| Abstract | Kidney transplantation offers improved survival and quality of life for patients with End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD), but successful long-term outcomes depend not only on careful post-transplant follow-up care but also on consistent self-monitoring by patients. Various guidelines exist to support transplant recipients, yet navigating post-transplant care can still feel overwhelming for many patients. Particularly, the first year post-transplant is a period of heightened risk for graft rejection, opportunistic infection, and medication-related complications, hence requiring structured follow-up. Current guides exist; however, their clinical complexity often makes them difficult to implement in everyday patient care. This review examines best practices for post-transplant monitoring based on literature review. Emphasis is placed on immunosuppressant medication, laboratory testing, and imaging follow-up. Additionally, lifestyle guidance, such as counseling or psychosocial support, are integral. Future research should prioritize the development of unified and accessible care protocols for this particular patient group. |
