Post-Independent Dalit Movement in Karnataka

Abstract The post-independent Dalit movement in Karnataka represents a major chapter in the history of India’s social transformation. Although political independence in 1947 promised equality and justice to all citizens, Dalits in Karnataka continued to face caste-based discrimination, economic deprivation, and social exclusion. The movement emerged as a collective response to these injustices, inspired by Dr. B. R. Ambedkar’s ideals of self-respect, education, and organized struggle, and also by Basavanna’s egalitarian philosophy Beginning with reformist efforts in the 1950s and gaining momentum in the 1970s, the formation of the Dalit Sangharsha Samiti (DSS) marked a decisive shift from passive acceptance to militant assertion. The DSS fought for land rights, dignity, and protection against atrocities, while uniting Dalits across regional and caste lines. Parallel to this political awakening, the Dalit Bandaya Sahitya (Protest Literature) movement transformed Kannada literature into a vehicle of resistance, portraying the lived experiences and aspirations of the oppressed. The post-independence Dalit movement thus combined social activism, political mobilization, and cultural assertion to challenge the structures of caste hierarchy. Its impact extended beyond Dalit communities, reshaping Karnataka’s social consciousness, democratizing its literature, and influencing state policy on equality and representation. The movement remains a living force that continues to inspire struggles for justice, dignity, and human rights in contemporary Karnataka.
