| Abstract | Objective: The objective was to examine how nursing education and training affected the prevalence of central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI) and ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP). Patients and MethodsAdult patients who spent more than 48 hours in the intensive care unit were included in a prospective observational study conducted at a tertiary care institution. The study was conducted in three stages: Phase 1 involved calculating the baseline incidence of VAP and CLABSI; Phase 2 involved educating and training nurses; and Phase 3 involved recollecting data on the incidence of VAP and CLABSI. Results: In Phase 1, the baseline incidence of CLABSI was 7.89/1000 central-line days and that of VAP was 28.86/1000 ventilator days. Phase 3 saw a sharp decline in CLABSI incidence to 1.73 and an increase in VAP incidence to 35.06. Conclusion: Over the course of six months, intensive education and training sessions with feedback from nurses significantly reduced the prevalence of CLABSI; nevertheless, the incidence of VAP increased. |
