GENDER REPRESENTATION IN CONTEMPORARY MALAYALAM CINEMA

Abstract	Malayalam cinema has witnessed a powerful shift in the way it represents women through past two decades. Once limited to roles of devotion, sacrifice, or silence, women characters are now portrayed as independent thinkers and active agents of change. This transformation reflects a broader social awakening toward gender equality and feminist thought in Kerala. The new wave of filmmakers and storytellers presents women not as symbols, but as individuals with their own voices, struggles, and desires. This paper examines how contemporary Malayalam cinema visualizes feminism through characters, storytelling patterns, visual style, and engagement with real-world gender politics.
