| Abstract | This study evaluates the level of coping skills among higher secondary school students in Mizoram and evaluates the differences by gender, academic stream and school management. A quantitative descriptive survey design is used to gather data on 1,386 students using a structured Coping Skills Scale that included academic coping, emotional regulation, physical control, spiritual well-being and resistance to peer pressure. Z-score norms were used to standardize total scores so that students can be categorized based on the level of high, moderate, and low coping. Analysis was done using descriptive statistics, independent samples t-tests, and one-way ANOVA tests. Findings indicated that 76.12 percent of students had moderate coping skills, 13.49 percent had high coping skills and 10.39 percent had low coping skills. Gender difference was statistically significant where the females had a mean of 93.520 and SD of 12.923, and the males had a mean of 95.825 and SD of 12.897 (t = 3.264, p =.01). There was no major difference among the streams of academics (Arts, Commerce, Science; F = 1.268, n.s.), or types of school management (Government vs. Private; t = 0.819, n.s.). The results outline generally sufficient coping in adolescents and a significant subgroup that needs specific attention. Educational implications are universal programs on life-skills that are to be complemented with interventions based on the enhancement of stress management and emotional resilience. |
