Bridging Wisdom: The Influence of Ayurvedic Pramana on Modern Scientific Methodology

| Abstract | Pramana in Ayurveda refers to the means of acquiring valid knowledge (Prama). It serves as the epistemological foundation upon which the entire Ayurvedic system of thought and practice is built. Modern scientific methodology, on the other hand, relies on observation, hypothesis, experimentation, and analysis to establish valid conclusions. Interestingly, these scientific steps find conceptual parallels within the Ayurvedic Pramana framework. This review article explores how the four principle Pramanas—Aptopadesha (authoritative testimony), Pratyaksha (perception), Anumana (inference), and Yukti (rational synthesis)—align with the components of modern scientific inquiry. By systematically analyzing their methodological overlap, this paper argues that Pramana Vidnyana not only complements modern epistemology but also provides an integrative philosophical foundation for evidence-based Ayurvedic research. |
