| Abstract | The practice of online gaming is something a lot of adolescents participate in and provides a unique venue for adolescents to experiment with identity and expression. This narrative review focuses on the role of online gaming in the identity formation of adolescent girls, and addresses the positive and negative aspects of this dual identity component. The silver lining to this is that gaming has a plethora of perks ranging from creativity to self and social discovery that allows girls to explore new roles and ultimately, create important bonds with virtual communities. Nonetheless, many negative side effects remain, like enforcing of gender roles, online abuse, and gaming addiction, which can damage psychological health and identity stability. In this paper, we summarize the existing literature examining these topics, we offer several actionable suggestions for educators, parents and game developers, and we make a few recommendations for designing safer and more empowering games for adolescent girls. This review intends to shed light on the discussion around developing inclusive and supportive virtual spaces for adolescent identity development by balancing the benefits and drawbacks of GBL. |
