| Abstract | Japanese learners of English have long struggled to develop effective communicative skills despite years of formal education. This paper explores the factors hindering such improvement and evaluates whether e-learning, particularly online English conversation lessons, can serve as an effective solution. The study first identifies two primary obstacles: (1) Japan’s exam-oriented English education system, which prioritizes grammar and vocabulary over interactive communication, and (2) personality traits common among Japanese learners, such as shyness and perfectionism, that suppress active participation in English conversation. Subsequently, the paper examines the potential of online English conversation lessons conducted via video conferencing tools. The findings suggest that e-learning offers several advantages, including convenience, immediate feedback, and customizable lesson content that supports learners’ motivation and accommodates perfectionist tendencies. However, its limitations include reduced exposure to group interaction and the tendency for learners to avoid challenging areas by choosing only preferred topics. In conclusion, while online English conversation lessons can effectively enhance individual communicative confidence and competence, a balanced approach that combines e-learning with opportunities for group communication is essential for overcoming cultural and psychological barriers to fluency. |
