Intercultural Communication and Global Englishes

| Abstract | This study investigated the evolving dynamics of intercultural communication in the context of English language globalization. The assumption that the worldwide spread of English would inherently foster global harmony, mutual understanding, and cultural cooperation has become increasingly idealistic. The findings revealed that globalization, while expanding opportunities for communication, has simultaneously deepened socio-economic inequalities and heightened cultural competition across societies. Moreover, digital platforms and social media algorithms, designed to connect people across cultures, have also contributed to the spread of misinformation, cultural stereotyping, and ideological polarization. As English becomes progressively commodified and detached from its symbolic and cultural depth, it functions not only as a global lingua franca but also as an instrument of symbolic power that shapes identity, privilege, and access. The research highlighted that effective intercultural communication requires not only linguistic and communicative competence but also symbolic competence the capacity to interpret socio-cultural meanings, recognize ideological forces, and critically navigate communicative exchanges within both physical and digital environments. Drawing on examples from India and AI-mediated communication platforms, the study examined how Global Englishes have transformed communicative practices and cultural identities in diverse contexts. The research concludes that reorienting language education toward developing critical and reflective awareness of symbolic power, technology, and cultural diversity is essential for promoting equitable and meaningful intercultural understanding in an increasingly globalized world. |
