Women as an Agent of Food Security: Role and Constraints

Abstract Rural women make major and multiple contributions to the achievement of household food security and produce more than half of the food grown worldwide . Recognition of the role played by women in ensuring food security is of immense significance for planning and implementing rural development plans successfully. It is necessary to know the activities women are engaged in for ensuring household and community’s food security and the constraints faced by them. Most of the constraints faced by them are related to gender specific role in our society, capital, credit, marketing, unavailability of inputs and lack of agricultural extension services etc. To remove these constraints women must not only have equal rights, capabilities and access to resources and opportunities, but they must also have the agency to use those rights, capabilities, resources and opportunities to make strategic choices. The survey was conducted in the Naduar block of Sonitpur district of Assam. The respondents were selected by simple random sampling method. Data for the study was collected both from the primary and the secondary sources. The study aims at analyzing the role of women as an agent of food security and highlight the obstacles which stand in their way, reducing their ability to achieve their goal and suggest measures to remove the same
