Abstract This study examines the significant and growing influence of Japanese anime on the creative practices of Indian animators, including students, independent practitioners, and industry professionals. Given anime's massive popularity in India (over 83% preference), its impact on local animation culture and character design is a critical subject. A survey of 410 animation-focused respondents across India found that over 80% identify as anime fans and report a substantial influence on their artistic style. Furthermore, 73% agreed that anime is actively shaping current Indian industry trends, with 61% viewing this influence as beneficial to the local industry. However, the findings reveal a key tension regarding the preservation of a local identity. Awareness of Indian animated films and characters is limited among students (only 51% familiarity with classics, compared to 83% among professionals). Alarmingly, 44% of all respondents—a view held more strongly by industry veterans—expressed concern that anime's widespread popularity could be diluting the development of a unique Indian animation style (Razak & Ibnu, 2022). Crucially, this concern is balanced by a strong desire to reinforce local heritage, as two-thirds of all respondents (including over 70% of professionals) agreed that Indian animation education should place greater emphasis on indigenous art styles and themes. In conclusion, the research highlights a pressing need for balance in animation curricula and industry practice. While Japanese anime is widely loved and seen as creatively inspiring, this inspiration must be leveraged for innovation while simultaneously strengthening India’s own local creative foundations (Pathak, 2022). This study offers quantitative insight for educators and industry leaders to guide the evolution of India's emerging animation market in a way that enriches, rather than eclipses, its unique animation landscape.
