How Students Learn With AI: Cognitive, Motivational and Behavioral Impacts of AITools

Author(s) Ms. Indira S S

Abstract The proliferation of artificial intelligence (AI) tools in education—including intelligent tutoring systems and generative AI chatbots—has significantly transformed student learning. This article explores the cognitive, motivational, and behavioral impacts of AI tools, drawing on empirical research and theoretical frameworks. While AI can enhance personalization, engagement, and self-efficacy, risks include cognitive offloading, overdependence, and diminished higher-order thinking. A framework for responsible AI integration is proposed, combining adaptive AI design, educator scaffolding, and student metacognitive training. Recommendations for research, policy, and practice are discussed.
