| Abstract | Emotional Intelligence (EI) plays a vital role in shaping professional competence among nursing students, particularly in fostering self-awareness, empathy, motivation, and effective emotional regulation—key components of patient-centered care. This descriptive cross-sectional study assessed EI levels among 184 B.Sc. Nursing students in a selected College of Nursing in Nagaland, using the Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire developed by the National Health Service (UK). Findings revealed that students demonstrated strong self-awareness (78.3%) and empathy (57.1%), suggesting a solid foundation in recognizing personal emotions and understanding others’ feelings. However, lower scores were observed in self-motivation (26.1%), social skills (38.0%), and managing emotions (23.9%), indicating the need for targeted development in resilience, teamwork, and emotional regulation. No significant association was noted between EI levels and demographic variables such as age, year of study, or sibling position. Overall, while the students possess strengths consistent with the caring nature of nursing, the study highlights the importance of integrating EI-focused learning strategies. Structured programs such as reflective practice, resilience training, and stress-management workshops can enhance emotional competence and support students’ personal and professional growth. |
