In Defense of the Country: Narratives of Women Members of the Armed Forces of the Philippines in Visayas Command

| Abstract | This study explores the experiences of women in the Armed Forces of the Philippines in Visayas Command, Cebu City, Philippines. Specifically, it determined the following: experiences of the informants in the performance of their duties, the strategies employed by the informants in addressing the problems encountered in the performance of their duties and the aspirations of the informants to improve the quality of their services in the community. This study utilized the qualitative research method employing the transcendental phenomenological approach that involves thematic content analysis. This study was conducted in the Armed Forces of the Philippines Visayas Command, Cebu City, Philippines. There were twelve selected informants of the study, four from each major branches --Philippine Navy, Philippine Air Force and Philippine Army. Findings revealed twelve emergent themes. For positive experiences, themes include Breaking Boundaries: Empowering Equality and Capability, The Art of Balancing Work and Family and From Sacrifice to Success: Personal Growth and Fulfillment in the Service. For negative experiences, themes include New Horizons: Sadness in Reassignment, Duty First: Struggles of Delayed Leave in the Military and Navigating Gender Inequality and Harassment. For the informants strategies in addressing the problems encountered, themes include Adaptive Leadership in Diverse Military Contexts, Boosting Inner Strength and Building Coping Mechanisms and Service Beyond Frontier Zones. For the aspirations of the informants to improve the quality of their services in the community, themes include Family as a Source of Motivation, Commitment to Service Excellence and lastly is Gratitude for Benefits and Support. In conclusion, despite the gender-related programs implemented by the Armed Forces of the Philippines, many women continue to face significant challenges in balancing their roles as soldiers, wives, and mothers. However, the informants believe that these challenges have been instrumental in shaping them into more resilient and effective soldiers in the present. |
