THE PLIGHT OF WOMEN MANUAL SCAVENGERS IN TAMIL NADU

Author(s) Dr. Thangadurai Thangavel, Prof. Dr. Suriyan Karuppiah
Country India
Abstract Despite legal prohibitions and rehabilitative initiatives, manual scavenging is still a pervasive social problem in India. Women who work as manual scavengers in Tamil Nadu endure severe social, financial, and health-related disadvantages. The socioeconomic circumstances, health hazards, and social stigma that women manual scavengers encounter are examined in this study, emphasizing the systemic injustices that sustain their exclusion. The study also looks at how well rehabilitation programs and government policies address their issues. These strategies may include providing access to education, vocational training, and healthcare services, as well as fostering awareness campaigns to challenge social stigmas. By implementing comprehensive support systems, it is possible to empower these women and facilitate their transition into more dignified and sustainable livelihoods.
