The City as a Postcolonial Archives: Urban Memory, Marginality, and Power in the Fiction of Rohinton Mistry and Neel Mukherjee

Author(s) Ms. Shivangi Jain, Prof. Dr. Kamlesh Chaurasia
Country India
Abstract This study explores how the urban landscapes of Bombay/Mumbai and Kolkata function as postcolonial archives in the fiction of Rohinton Mistry and Neel Mukherjee. Focusing on memory, marginality and power, the paper examines how these authors depict cities as repositories of social inequalities, historical trauma, and marginalized voices often absent from official records. By analyzing selected novels, the research highlights how literature preserves subalterns experiences, documents urban transformations, and reinterprets city spaces as living archives of contested histories.
Keywords Postcolonial City, Urban Memory, Marginality, Rohinton Mistry, Neel Mukherjee.
