“Neuroprotective Potential of Abietic Acid: Mechanisms, Evidence and Prospects in Parkinson’s Disease Models.”

Author(s) Mr. Sahil

Abstract Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by dopaminergic neuronal loss, mitochondrial dysfunction, and oxidative stress. Natural compounds with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity have gained increasing interest as potential neuroprotective agents. Abietic acid, a diterpenoid resin acid derived from Pinus species, is known for its potent anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and cytoprotective properties. Recent evidence from in vitro and in vivo studies—especially toxin-induced models such as rotenone and 6-OHDA—suggests its ability to modulate oxidative pathways, suppress neuroinflammation, and stabilize neuronal function. This review summarizes current knowledge on the biochemical profile of abietic acid, its pharmacological activities, mechanisms relevant to neuroprotection and its potential therapeutic role in managing Parkinson’s disease. The article also highlights gaps in research and proposes directions for future studies, including the need for mammalian model validation and molecular pathway characterization.
