| Abstract | The study evaluates the economic impact and sustainability of integrating farm pond-based aquaculture in rainfed agricultural systems in Yadgir district of Karnataka state. Farm ponds, initially intended for irrigation, were repurposed for aquaculture introducing varieties of fingerlings into pilot sites. The integrated farming approach enabled synergistic resource management, promoting diversification and resilience in rural livelihoods. Economic analysis of the intervention revealed considerable increases in net farm income, with aquaculture contributing 20-33% additional household income, depending on landholding and pond management practices. Return on Investment (ROI) for fish culture ranged from 270% to 335%, with the largest ponds and optimized stocking densities yielding higher productivity (up to 1.38 kg/m³). The intervention leveraged existing agricultural byproducts such as cattle dung and groundnut oil cake for pond fertilization and supplementary feed, thus reducing variable input costs and supporting circular resource utilization. Findings of the study highlights that the farm pond-based aquaculture can serve as a viable, low-cost strategy for increasing farm profitability, enhancing water use efficiency, and increasing nutritional security in rainfed areas. When combined with traditional crop and livestock enterprises, the integrated system fostered sustainable intensification, ensured periodic cash flow, and improved household economic resilience against climatic adversities. The study underscores the potential for scaling up such interventions to double farmers’ income and contribute to the broader goals of rural development and food system sustainability. |
