The Silent Constitution: Dr. Ambedkar’s Forgotten Feminism and the Rewriting of Indian Womanhood

Abstract This paper revisits the voluminous yet under-explored feminist legacy of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, as recorded across the 42 volumes of his Writings and Speeches (BAWS). Contrary to popular portrayals of Ambedkar primarily as a Dalit reformer and constitutionalist, this study uncovers a radical gender agenda embedded across his legal drafts, speeches, letters, and philosophical notes. Through rigorous thematic analysis, the paper reveals how Ambedkar laid the blueprint for Indian feminist thought—from lawmaking to religion, from education to resistance—making him the unacknowledged architect of modern Indian womanhood. His vision encompassed political enfranchisement, socio-economic justice, spiritual emancipation, and structural transformation that together constitute a feminist doctrine ahead of its time.
