Integrating Indian Knowledge Systems into Higher Education: Pathways for NEP 2020 Implementation in Rural and Tribal India

Author(s) Dr. KISHOR KUMAR DASH
Country India
Abstract This paper celebrates the timeless wisdom of Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) by exploring their transformative potential in reshaping higher education in rural and tribal India under NEP 2020. Rooted in India’s civilizational heritage, the study illuminates how indigenous ecological knowledge, oral traditions, classical philosophies, and community ethics can rejuvenate academic spaces with cultural pride, holistic learning, and sustainable values. Drawing insights from the vibrant tribal knowledge landscape of Malkangiri, Odisha, it highlights the extraordinary richness of local healing practices, environmental harmony, traditional governance, and artistic expression. The paper identifies existing barriers while proposing a visionary IKS Implementation Model that blends curriculum innovation, faculty empowerment, community partnership, and experiential learning. It concludes that the integration of IKS is not merely an educational reform, but a national renaissance—an intellectual awakening that aligns with NEP 2020 and advances India’s march toward Viksit Bharat with dignity, identity, and rooted excellence.
