| Abstract | Women’s empowerment is a multidimensional process involving access to economic resources, social recognition, decision-making power, and enhanced quality of life. This qualitative study explores how DMI Women’s World, through its Self-Help Group (SHG) federations, empowers vulnerable women in Poonamalle Block, Tamil Nadu, by supporting the fulfilment of basic, psychological, and self-fulfilment needs as conceptualized in Maslow’s hierarchy. Data were collected from federation leaders across SHGs in Poonamalle Block, Tamil Nadu, through semi-structured interviews and were analysed using Braun and Clarke’s thematic analysis. Eight major themes emerged relating to basic needs fulfillment, empowerment, leadership development, collaboration, sustainability, and self-actualisation. The findings reveal that DMI Women’s World’s federative structure is instrumental in enabling financial independence, creating safe and dignified work opportunities, improving access to welfare services, promoting savings culture, fostering self-confidence, and nurturing leadership. The study concludes that DMI’s SHG federation model is an effective, needs-based, and sustainable pathway for empowering vulnerable women and strengthening community resilience in marginalized socio-economic contexts. |
