Abstract The rapid evolution of Industry 4.0 technologies has transformed traditional inventory management practices across global manufacturing systems. In the Indian manufacturing sector, the integration of digital tools such as the Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), cloud computing, RFID, automation, and advanced analytics is increasingly viewed as a strategic necessity for improving operational efficiency. This study examines the extent of adoption of Industry 4.0–enabled inventory management technologies and evaluates their impact on key operational performance indicators, including cost efficiency, inventory turnover, production responsiveness, stock accuracy, and supply chain agility. Using a mixed-method research approach, data were collected from manufacturing firms across automotive, engineering, and heavy-industry segments through structured questionnaires and in-depth interviews with supply chain and operations managers. The findings reveal that firms with higher levels of digital integration demonstrate significant improvements in inventory visibility, decision-making speed, demand forecasting accuracy, and overall operational performance. However, challenges such as high implementation costs, skill gaps, resistance to change, and limited digital infrastructure continue to impede widespread adoption. The study provides actionable insights for policymakers and industry leaders to accelerate digital transformation in inventory systems and highlights the need for capacity building, investment in smart technologies, and a phased adoption roadmap. Overall, this research contributes to the growing body of knowledge on smart inventory management and underscores the crucial role of Industry 4.0 in enhancing the competitiveness and sustainability of the Indian manufacturing sector.
