Telescopic Wings in UAVs – Design, Aerodynamic, and Structural Challenges: A Comprehensive Review

Abstract Reconfigurable telescopic wings are a promising solution for the morphing of UAVs, whether by means of variable wingspan for improved aerodynamic efficiency, mission flexibility and forward bases reached. In this review, the history, design principles, aerodynamic consequences, and engineering challenges of telescopic wing configurations are discussed. Most existing works further fail to provide a complete multi-disciplinary approach that connects real scale physical prototyping with smart actuation, structural durability and integration of autonomous control. The major disadvantages are absence of experimental verification, small attention to dynamic stability during span change, and insufficient consideration of manufacturability and long-term reliability tests. In this work, existing works were reviewed and the key challenges which limit the application of telescopic wing UAVs were identified. An integrated overview that provides implications for the design–aerodynamics–control nexus is provided, which aims to direct future research on robust, scalable, flight-proven telescopic wing systems to fulfill demanding mission requirements.
