Abstract Visual representations are the centrally placed in biological information that learnt and transmitted through various textbooks. This research explores the application of diagram conventions like arrows, colour codes, labelling, and cross-sections in Maharashtra state board higher secondary biology textbook. Employing a content analysis of 21 diagrams from one key unit, the study detects both quantitative differences and qualitative variations in style of representation and pedagogical purpose. Findings reveal that Maharashtra state board textbook favour static, label-centred diagrams that facilitate memorization and factual recall and lacks use of conventions effectively and without highlighting processes, causality, and reasoning. The results indicate that diagram conventions are closely embedded in curricular ideologies, classroom materials from across the globe promote classroom constructivist learning but Indian textbooks prioritize accuracy and consistency. The research indicates the necessity of teaching visual literacy and convention use explicitly in Indian science curricula to enhance diagrammatic reasoning, comprehension and conceptual knowledge among students.
