Abstract Libraries have played a central role in preserving and sharing knowledge from ancient times to the digital age. Over the centuries, library systems and tools have changed continuously in response to social needs, technological developments, and user expectations. This review paper examines the historical evolution of library systems and tools, starting from early record-keeping practices to modern digital and intelligent library environments. Based on selected research papers, the study highlights major milestones such as early cataloging practices, the printing revolution, classification systems, automation, digital libraries, and emerging technologies. The review also connects historical developments with user perception and impact, showing how each stage of evolution improved access, usability, and efficiency of library services. The paper is written in simple English to make it useful for students, researchers, and library professionals.
