Challenges and Opportunities in Integrating AI with Indian Knowledge Systems for Future-Ready Education

| Abstract | The rapid expansion of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in global and Indian education systems has introduced new possibilities for personalised learning, intelligent tutoring, and data-driven instruction. Simultaneously, Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS)—encompassing India’s rich traditions in philosophy, sciences, arts, languages, and local knowledge—have gained renewed prominence in educational policy and curricular reforms. Integrating AI with IKS presents a unique opportunity to create a future-ready education model that is technologically advanced, culturally grounded, and socially meaningful. This study aims to analyse the key challenges and opportunities associated with merging AI applications with IKS for enhancing India’s educational landscape. Using secondary data derived from government policy documents, institutional reports, previous research studies, and international databases, the paper synthesises current trends and evaluates the feasibility of AI–IKS convergence. The findings indicate several major challenges, including infrastructural limitations, inadequate teacher training, gaps between technological design and indigenous epistemologies, risks of misrepresentation of traditional knowledge, and ethical concerns related to data governance. At the same time, the integration offers significant opportunities: AI-driven preservation and digitisation of IKS resources, improved multilingual and contextual learning, enhanced cultural engagement, and the development of innovative pedagogical models that blend modern skills with traditional wisdom. The study concludes that bridging AI and IKS requires coherent policy alignment, capacity building, ethical frameworks, and collaborative innovation across government, academia, and industry. Effective integration can strengthen India’s cultural identity while preparing learners with the competencies needed for a rapidly evolving technological world. |
