Spices as Vessels of Memory of Homeland in “the Mistress of Spices”

Author(s) Dr. Ritu Rani
Country India
Abstract This research paper examines how Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni portrays diasporic themes in her works especially in the context of The Mistress of Spices. Her writing often reflects the multifaceted experiences of Indians living abroad in both Eastern and Western settings, featuring characters who attempt to preserve their vibrant Indian culture through elements such as storyline, language, imagery, and character portrayal. The paper also brings attention to the challenges faced by women as they attempt to define their identities within the diasporic context. This paper particularly in the context of the novel The Mistress of Spices shows that how spices play role in finding the identity of Tilo and also connect her with her homeland.
The story begins with a woman named Tilottama, who introduces herself as a mistress of spices. Yet her expertise extends far beyond spices; she is well-versed in metals, minerals, earth, sand, stones, gems, and even fiery liquids. She acquired this knowledge while living on the island. The opening chapter, titled ‘Tilo’ presents her narration, where she explains that despite all she has learned, the spices are what she cherishes most.
