Abstract The aim of this study was to quantify the mycorrhization of Miombo tree species and to examine the correlation between the rate of ectomycorrhization in the natural environment and certain soil physicochemical parameters. The analysis focused on the level of infection of seedlings in the nursery and on the rate of mycorrhization of roots in the rhizosphere of adult trees, by observing the mycorrhizal mantle using an 8-10x magnifying glass.
The results show that, in nursery seedlings, mycorrhization is in the initiation phase at 9 months, with the presence of small mycelial filaments characteristic of the start of infection. In the wild, mycorrhization rates for Uapaka kirkiana and U. pilosa ranged from 52-70% and 41.4-70.1% respectively, although differences between samples were not significant.
For the roots studied, mycorrhization rates reach 78.5% and 100% respectively at depths of 0-10 cm and 10-20 cm in the rhizosphere soil of U. kirkiana (February samples). The June 2012 samples show percentages ranging from 61.5-96.5% for U. kirkiana and 40-80% for U. pilosa.
Physicochemical analyses indicate a soil pH between 5.01 and 5.12, while the physical structure is characterized by a high stony load (40-70%). A significant positive linear correlation was observed between the number of mycorrhizal roots and the total number of roots.
