Unraveling the Strand: A Comprehensive Review on the Forensic Significance of Microscopic Human Scalp Hair Analysis

| Abstract | Microscopic analysis of human scalp hair remains a pivotal tool in forensic science for linking suspects to crime scenes and reconstructing events. This review comprehensively explores the biological structure of scalp hair, the variety of microscopic techniques employed—including light microscopy, polarized light microscopy, comparison microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy—and their forensic applications. The review highlights how these methods aid in distinguishing human from animal hair, identifying individual characteristics, and supporting investigative leads in criminal cases such as sexual assault and violent crimes. Despite its forensic significance, microscopic hair analysis faces limitations such as subjectivity, potential for misidentification, and challenges in hair degradation. Recent advancements integrating DNA analysis, isotopic profiling, and digital imaging are discussed, emphasizing a multidisciplinary approach to enhance accuracy. Future directions focus on automation, standardization, and the incorporation of novel molecular techniques to strengthen the evidentiary value of hair analysis in legal contexts. |
