Abstract Hair has a variety of functions in a mammal, including concealing an animal from predators and signaling to other members of its species, but the basic function of hair in nearly all mammals is insulation. Prominent features of the pelage of extant mammals are its growth, replacement, color and mobility. The colour of hair depends on the quality and quantity of melanin injected into the forming hair by melanocytes at the base of the hair follicle. Black hair has dense melanin deposits in the both cortex and medulla; the white hair of human has an unpigmented cortex but pigmented medulla. The color patterns of mammals are built up by the colors of individual hairs. Most mammals are counter shaded (dark above and lighter beneath), a combination that is inconspicuous under most conditions.
In present study hair pattern of five species of Muridae families - Rattus rattus, Rattus rufescence, Mus musculus, Tatera indica, Bandocoota bengalensis were studied. On the contrary hairs of Muridae family are the only representatives of their respective genera and species. In this study was undertaken in order to contribute information on the structure of hair in species of Muridae family.
