| Abstract | In an era marked by ethical crises and short-sighted leadership, there is a growing global quest for timeless and universal principles of effective and moral governance. This paper explores the leadership philosophy embedded in Thiruvalluvar's Thirukkural, a classic Tamil treatise dating back to the post-Sangam period. The Thirukkural, structured into 133 chapters of 10 couplets each, provides a comprehensive framework for life, with a significant portion dedicated to statecraft and the qualities of a leader. This research systematically extracts and analyzes the leadership principles from the Thirukkural, categorizing them into two core dimensions: Virtue (Aram), which encompasses ethical integrity, compassion, and righteousness, and Vision (Porul), which encompasses strategic acumen, wealth creation, and worldly success. The study argues that Thiruvalluvar presents a symbiotic model where unwavering virtue is the non-negotiable foundation for effective and enduring vision. The research methodology is a qualitative thematic analysis of the primary text, supported by a review of classical and contemporary commentaries. The findings position the Thirukkural as a vital repository of wisdom, offering a holistic leadership model that integrates ethical conduct with pragmatic statecraft, remaining profoundly relevant for modern leaders. |
