An Analytical Study of Infant Mortality in Maharashtra

Author(s) Dr. Ganesh B. Mangade
Country India
Abstract Infant mortality is a key indicator of population health, socio-economic development, and the effectiveness of healthcare systems. The present study examines the trends, patterns, and determinants of Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) in Maharashtra, with reference to broader child mortality trends in India. The study is based on secondary data obtained from the National Family Health Survey (NFHS), Sample Registration System (SRS), Census of India, and government health reports, covering the period 2010–2021. A descriptive and analytical research design is adopted, employing tools such as percentage analysis, trend analysis, and comparative analysis. The findings reveal a significant decline in infant mortality in Maharashtra, with IMR decreasing steadily across successive NFHS rounds. However, persistent rural–urban disparities remain, with rural areas recording higher mortality rates than urban areas. Gender differentials and maternal education also emerge as important determinants. The study concludes that while progress is evident, targeted rural health interventions are essential to achieve equitable reductions in infant mortality.
